Review: The Thief (The Queen's Thief #1) by Megan Whalen Turner

The Thief
(The Queen's Thief #1)

Author: Megan Whalen Turner
Paperback, 280 pages
Published December 27th 2005 by Greenwillow Books

"The king's scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king's prison. The magus is interested only in the thief's abilities.

What Gen is interested in is anyone's guess. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses."

I almost passed this book over but my sister insisted that I read this book. And I'm so glad that I read it. Megan is a creative writer. The world and characters she created were very likable. There's humor, adventure, and political intrigue. The book is a little slow but it really builds up, and the ending is enormously satisfying.

Gen claims to be the best thief in all of Sounis. After being caught stealing one of the king's prized possessions and showing it off, he ended up locked up in prison. The king's scholar decides to use Gen to find the Hamiathes Gift. Together Gen, Magus, and three other companions set off on a journey to chase after an ancient treasure no has never seen, but only heard of through myths. They faced many obstacles during their journey but always overcome them.

I think the plot was well thought out. It can be confusing if you aren’t paying attention, but if you, are you will enjoy this book a lot.
I really liked Gen, he is clever and sly and so conceited! I love all his witty comments and banters with his traveling companions. It was slow paced at some parts in the book but overall I really liked it. I heard the next two books are a lot better than the first. So I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, The Queen of Attolia, and The King of Attolia.
